WIP Wednesday

I've made great progress on the Ruby/Vintage Modern Hexie Quilt. It's all pieced, spray basted and quilting almost halfway done. Woohoo!
After a basting failure on my driveway (front was great, back got messed up!), I re-spray basted it in my favorite way (though terrible for everything in the vicinity), hung it on the wall. Gravity is my BFF. Plus there is airconditioning inside and no chance of dripping sweat on the quilt. Ick.
Lookin' so gorgeous being quilted.

A project I'm starting on though don't really need done til March (or maybe Christmas...I can't decide) is a lovely rainbow scrappy Sparkle Punch quilt. I originally had plans of making my younger daughter a Single Girl quilt for her big girl bed, but when just tracing and cutting out the templates took longer than I liked I realized I'd still be cutting the thing out when Christmas rolls around, much less figuring out how to piece those curved seams and so on. Thankfully the fabric I bought for Single Girl works wonderfully for Sparkle Punch and she can have a big girl quilt much sooner. Maybe Single Girl will be done in time for her to go to college. She's about 2.5 yo now, I can get it done in the next 16 years right?
Basket of Sparkle Punch fabrics, and a few stacks of what has been cut.
(And there is a little sneak peek of another project I'm working on. A sample of a new pattern my friend over at TraceyJay Quilts is working up. It required I finally put up a design wall, but it is awesome!)
And finally...a stack of quilts. This isn't anything new. They've been sitting around for months, but they've decided they will no longer be ignored. The top one is basted and ready for quilting as soon as I am done with the hexie quilt.

    1. Here is a great tutorial. http://chasingcottons.blogspot.com/2011/06/spray-basting-tutorial-with-kristie.html
I don't have a great floorspace in my little house which is why I've resorted to the driveway or hanging it from a wall. Though I still prefer the wall because gravity really is your BFF. I just use quilt tacks and pin the whole backing to the wall, it nice and smooth, then I will tack the top of batting to the wall as well. I start at the top with the spray and work my way down about 1 foot at a time. Then I do the quilt top. You kind of have to get underneath the layer you are basting on, so it may be more fumey than other methods, but I *never* get crinkles or folds when I do it on the wall.
Although I have had to sacrifice a wall in my studio for the sake of basting, lots of little holes and a bit of sticky fuzz. I put a sheet over the carpet and anything sitting nearby that can't easily be moved.

  9. Love the hexagons, and you are right, the wall works wonders for putting the quilt layers together, I have been doing it that way for many years, mainly because of lack of space!

  16. You are one productive piecer, I can't wait to see them all quilted. The colours of your hexies are just yummy. A word to the wise: unless your daughter is very quiet and neat: no white in a kid's quilt, unless you want to wash the poor thing often.....

    1. I don't think it's un-wise to use white in a quilt, even for kids. Yes, they make messes, but their quilts are loved, which is the point (of the ones I make anyway). =)
