I'm part of an awesome little facebook quilting group. What started as a group to talk about quilting, and seek quilting related advice has turned into the gathering place of a group of real friends. We are spread out all over the world, but in the group it feels like we are right around the corner from one another.
A few months ago one of our dear friends lost her husband. While we could not fully comprehend her pain, we all hurt with her, and so we did what quilter's do - we made a quilt. We stalked her pin boards for the perfect color palette, we even came across the perfect quilt block, and we got to work.
24 of us made blocks, another friend helped out in other special ways. Everyone sent their blocks to me, and I pieced the top, then I sent it on to Heidi for quilting. (Go see her post for more photos, the quilting is fantastic!)
There was so much love, it spilt over to the backing.
The quilt finished at 72" x 84".
Rebecca received it yesterday, and while it is just a quilt, I hope that she will know that she is loved and that we will always be there for her.
Such a bittersweet post! It made me tear up just reading. No matter how many quilts she has made, this will probably be her favorite because of all the love.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful of you friends to make a quilt for her. One of my best friends lost her husband to pancreatic/colon cancer within six weeks last October. She said she lost a part of her soul, too. She said that people say divorce is a death, too, but you have a choice in that (that's not always true - if your spouse files, eventually you will be divorced no matter how hard you fight - there is a no fault cause - been there done that!) Any how she says that unless you have been through it, you do not understand. You are angels to do that for her. Right now she may not fully appreciate what you have done for her. I'm sure she is stunned.
ReplyDeleteThis is what quilting is all about... great quilt and I'm sure it will be treasured by your friend. So much love stitch by stitch!

I adore this quilt. I think I saw blocks somewhere when it was being assembled and I fell in love. It's so beautiful. Amazing that it was pieced by so many and yet it all looks so perfect together. Well done, ladies!
